With incredible sophistication and detailing, this embroidery depicts a motif from Chauvet Cave, currently the oldest known rock art site in the world. On a rocky canvas, a woolly rhinoceros stands, a species that has roamed Europe until the end of the last glacial period 11,000 years ago. Outline of the rhinoceros shows the sideways view with prominent defining features exaggerated. The ears appear to be drawn based on a local convention. We recreated this ancient painting with more than a hundred thousand stitches, with great detailing and superb shading. The embroidery is a masterpiece and a true tribute to ancient cave artists.
It just may be that artistic expression is innate to human and a vital part of what makes us human. These thoughts are bound to come to us while observing 30,000-year-old Chauvet Cave paintings that arise from the very dawn of a modern human. Back then, woolly rhinoceroses and mammoths, lions, panthers and hyenas reigned European steppes, and they are all recreated on the walls of Chauvet Cave, along with bears, horses, deer and bison. The paintings strike us with sophisticated perception, shading and realistic details which distinguish this historic site from others of the same age.
