Flight remains one of man's greatest dreams, something we have only mastered through leaps of technology and by strapping ourselves into machines that allow us to soar... Something that Nature achieved seemingly effortlessly in countless animal species from vastly different families. Our embroidered series »Wings« takes us on a journey across the animal kingdom to explore their own »technology« that allows them to fly. Bats are a curious of shoot of mammals, evolving with a unique ability to take flight amongst all the other furry cousins, their wings designed from skin stretched between its fingers and body instead of feathers, and with their own special trick: instead of large eyes, as on the owls, the bats chose to use a different set of senses for their nocturnal excursions: they use the nature's equivalent of sonars to navigate the dark. High pitched sounds bounce off any obstacles or prey in the calm night air, which they then pick up with their highly sensitive ears, creating a very precise image of the world around them. The effectiveness of this sensory advantage and the bat's strong wings gives them an advantage over their prey and their predators alike.
