The whole series as a set of 8 measures 80 x 160 cm (31.4 x 62.8 in).
This beautiful embroidery recreates a motif from Lascaux Cave, famous for its exquisite cave paintings. The motif is known as The Cow with Collar and it represents a female auroch. Our gaze is drawn to the double line of the auroch’s back, the second one being a correction. A similar correction has been done on hindquarters to place them further back. The second intervention was done by painting, extending the whole shape of the auroch to improve its silhouette. These details reveal a desire for excellence of the finished work and indicate deep relationship between an ancient human and their art. We have managed to recreate all the details in this superb embroidery.
Estimated to be more than 17,000 years old, Lascaux Cave paintings amaze us with its incredible beauty and sophistication. Exceptional realism, as well as their spectacular colours, is why Lascaux is sometimes referred to as The Sistine Chapel of Prehistory – and their artists as Michelangelos and Da Vincis of Palaeolithic. Their art survived through millennia of the changing world, rising and falling of civilizations, wars and weather, leaving a permanent mark for us and our descendants to find and admire.
