The whole series as a set of 8 measures 80 x 160 cm (31.4 x 62.8 in).
Pure greatness shines from this embroidery, depicting a motif from Lascaux Cave, one of the most impressive cave paintings sites in the world. The motif is known as The Black Stag. Only the upper part of the animal has been depicted but with high degree of finishing, especially the head, with antlers pushed back as if the stag was troating. The open mouth is surrounded by an orange cloud that may indicate its breath. Several signs lie beneath the figure, namely a line of eleven black dots and a rectangle. We have honoured the ancient masterpiece by recreating it in this beautiful embroidery.
Estimated to be more than 17,000 years old, Lascaux Cave paintings amaze us with its incredible beauty and sophistication. Exceptional realism, as well as their spectacular colours, is why Lascaux is sometimes referred to as The Sistine Chapel of Prehistory – and their artists as Michelangelos and Da Vincis of Palaeolithic. Their art survived through millennia of the changing world, rising and falling of civilizations, wars and weather, leaving a permanent mark for us and our descendants to find and admire.
